N. Houghton (1875-1885)

There is little information about N. Houghton of Bolton, and research continues. There is at least one clock attributed to N. Houghton.

N. HOUGHTON, BOLTON. AN 18TH CENTURY AND LATER DOUBLE FUSEE VERGE BRACKET CLOCK

The later ebonised case with bell top pediment above a glazed door with pierced brass sound frets enclosing a later silvered engraved dial with Roman numerals and Strike/Silent subsidiary dial fronting an eight day double fusee movement with verge escapement and full engraved backplate striking the hours on a bell.

Even though furniture makers began to ebonise furniture in the 16th century, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the practice became popular. From 1875 to 1885, there was an aesthetic movement in Britain and America that led to the revival of ebonising.

The completed clock was likely purchased in by Houghton and fitted with the silvered dial, and most likely ebonised them during the 1875-1885 period.
