George Makin was described in 1881 as a Pawnbroker & Dealer In Watches & Jewellery, Living in 56 Manchester Road with his two sons, John and George Henry, employed in his store.
A George Makin and Son, Watch and Clock Makers are coincidentally listed at 56-60 Shudehill Manchester from 1881 to 1895, it is not known if this is George and his son John, as George Henry went on to be a soap manufacturer in Great Lever.
Makin survived into recent history and were bought out by Widdop & Co. in 1980.
It is possible George Makin took over the Porn-Broking Business of his neighbour Robert Heaton, who resided at the same address and was described as ‘retired’.
Whilst he is listed as a maker elsewhere, there isn’t yet found mention of Makin producing any watches or clocks. (Research continues)
