A large and impressive 8 day moon-phase longcase clock by Thomas Brierley of Bolton circa 1860
A large and impressive 8 day moon-phase longcase clock by Thomas Brierley of Bolton circa 1860 which stands 8′ 1″ tall from floor to finial top. The clock has a 14 inch dial.
The clock was one of two in a single lot purchased in Autumn 2022. It had been unused and in storage near Bristol for several years. Prior to then it was in use in a property in east Somerset. It is now in Gloucestershire near J13 M5 where the following work has been carried out.
Movement: the movement has been stripped, cleaned, polished, rebuilt and oiled. The date dial intermediate wheel was missing so a replacement has been fitted which was sourced from John Wardle. The clock when purchased came with a slightly incorrect size winding key which has been replaced with the correct size cranked key with hardwood handle from Cousins Material House.
Dial: The original varnish to the dial had yellowed with age and has been removed, the blackwork to the dial has been touched up where necessary and fresh coats of artist’s dammar varnish applied.
Case: The lower section of the case has been given several new coats of red mahogany french polish to match the rest of the case which has all been finished with Fiddes’ rich mahogany mellow wax. The clock comes with the original key to the case door.
The clock is currently in test running quietly and to time whilst minor adjustments continue to ensure the date dial and moon-phase dial advance by the correct amount daily. It will be ready for a new purchaser only once it has run correctly for a month but the clock is available to view by appointment
The recently completed work to the movement, case and dial amounted to 5 full days’ work
The price of this clock is £ Now Sold.
