John was a clock maker in Bolton, son of the Horologist Robert Walley also of Bolton. Born in Bolton on 4th April 1683, he marked his clocks “John Walley De Bolton” or ”John Walley de Bolton Fecit”.

He also used the mark Johannes Whalley De Bolton.
John is known to have worked on the clock at Wigan Church and he took an apprentice Henry Warburton in 1721, for a seven year apprenticeship.
John died in 1730, and was buried in the Parish Church, and at least two of his clocks is known to have survived.

John is known to have signed his clocks both as John, or Johannes Walley de Bolton.
