Joseph Scotson (1798-1835)

Joseph Scotson was a clockmaker from Liverpool who moved with his family to Radclife Bridge in the late 1790’s.

The son of Isaac Scotson from Burton in Kendal, Westmorland, a clockmaker and victualler of Merlin’s Cave Old Shambles Liverpool.

Born in Liverpool in 1759 he married Mary Cummings from Liverpool,on 17th September 1780 living at Dry Dock Quay.

By 1784 they had started a family and by 1788 they were listed as in Warrington, before returning to Liverpool finally arriving in Radcliffe Bridge by 1789 when their Daughter Jane, who was born in Liverpool in 1798, was baptised at St Mary’s Radcliffe on 1st July 1798.

Joseph died in Radcliffe bridge on 14th June 1835 aged 76, and was buried in Stand Lane (Presbyterian) Chapel, Pilkington, Lancashire.

His Son Joseph would go on to become a Clockmaker like his father, while James became an engineer and a victualler

There are no known examples of his Radcliffe Clocks, although Manchester Gallery has one of his Liverpool clocks.
